Un travail d'un virtuose de l'aquarelle
Galerie 55Bellechasse is pleased to announce "le chant des sirènes", a solo show by Ole Aakjær from June 25th to August 5th.
Danish artist Ole Aakjær (born 1962) has been drawing and painting since he was able to hold a pencil.
Originally, Aakjær's dream was to work and develop as an artist within the cartoon medium. He was especially fascinated and intrigued by the experimental parts of the cartoon scene that unfolded in the late 1980s. Among sources of inspiration at the time were Jean Giraud (Moebius), Milo Manara, Enki Bilal and many more.
In the mid-1980s, a collection of work by the artist was accepted by the publishing company Carlsen who at that time was the leading cartoon publishing company in Denmark. Ole Aakjær was later on trained as an illustrator and ran his own design office for a good period of years from 1992 onwards.
Aakjær has won a wide range of competitions and distinctions and gained recognition as an innovator, designer and especially as an artist, and he can look back at a number of sold out exhibitions. His creative work is always performed in watercolor and tusch on paper - often in very large scale formats.
Previously, he has experimented with acrylic and oil but it is on the turbulent ocean of the watercolor that he excels. His signature vibrant style with women with multilayered symbolism revealing their secrets are inspired by music, literature, films and photographs. The natural imperfections the artistic process leaves behind in the highly structured compositions unravel a very special world of wonder and admiration. Beauty and hidden messages. Aakjær portrays strong women that are sensual, alluring and untamed. Like constellations, Aakjær's artwork shift in time and space, and require close attention to be unveiled by our own imagination.
Despite his short time within the art business Ole Aakjær has already had more than 35 exhibitions in Denmark and abroad and the list of collectors wishing to get hold on a watercolor piece by the succesful artists is growing by numbers week after week. As of today Aakjær is represented in collections in New York City, Paris, Montreal, Switzerland and Denmark.
"Since I met him, I have seen so many fascinating faces, painted with maestria by him. The colourful water colors, in extra sized formats, are unforgettable. I recall few of them, may be because of their glamorous attitude. Indeed, they remind me of the women of Milo Manara. But with Ole, women on top of being sexy, wear bar code, postal stamps or kabbalistique drawing on their faces or bodies. Then, the strongest memory I have, is, the memory I had 2 years ago when I first saw Ole's women. It was prior the opening of an art fair. Few days later, Ole pieces were sold out, while most of the galleries where still looking for a first sale. Ole, in spite of his successes, especially these last 3 years, has remained calm and focus on production of unique serials for his coming shows. He has so many women he would like to use as a door to our "intimate" world. But a door that does not open fully, even for the girls who look at us straight in the eyes! To conclude, Ole has a very strong style, but all his pieces remain unique and bring their own stories. And let's make it clear, the orange noses have nothing to do with vodka. I hope for you, that you will be the lucky owner of any of them." Bertrand Scholler (2017)
