Vernissage de José León Cerrillo "The Commands"

It is with great pleasure that we announce the opening of The Commands, a new body of work by José León Cerrillo, opening on Saturday October 12 between 6 - 9 pm in the presence of the artist.

Using language - a system of meaning with inherent flaws and implied power structures - as a starting point and drawing from different sources (graphic ideologies, psychoanalytic theory, geometric abstraction...) Cerrillo continues his exploration into the possibilities and contradictions of thinking about genuine abstraction through a wide range of media, from printed posters to sculpture, installations and performance. Cerrillo's work is usually structured serially. This not only allows the work to be an ongoing investigation, an open set, but also admits for the possibility of a retroactive reading. Past scenarios can be reused and rethought. By changing its fixed status, past work becomes material for new work, new work that in turn has the possibility of affecting the way that original work is understood. The future helping the past.

Poems began as a silkscreen series in which an idiosyncratic alphabet of sorts was being compiled eventually turning into a growing archive. This alphabet uses symmetric letters and numbers, basic shapes and apparent mathematical symbols as an anatomy of content that sets the limits from where to think about the work itself. Such logic is applied as a reusable graphic system that is combined differently each time, allowing for mutable formats and media but always pointing to or making manifest, the possibilities of meaning through repetition: the jolly jolt of interpretation as form. Poems exist somewhere between diagrams, drawings, patterns, maps, or sign systems, a seemingly constant shift in form that implies the viewer as participant in a plausible autonomy for both subject and object. The Poems series have taken on different media in past projects; from silkscreen on glass, canvass, and marble to more sculptural solutions in concrete, wearable rain-proof jackets, or architectural outdoor pavilions.

The idea of the archive functions both as a verb and as a noun and has become, quite literally, an instrumental part in the new series The Commands. Where the Poems assembled a future archive for use, The Commands disassemble past structures used in the series of sculptures New Psychology. An auto-cannibalism of sorts. If the previous set of works, New Psychology, tackled problems of spatial perception, The Commands seemingly abbreviate this by becoming a relief - part sculpture/part mark on the wall; a gravity drawing that can be read as a usable component to decode and form New Psychology structures.
